We’ve tried Ethiopian honey processed coffees in years past, but when we sampled these coffees our team was impressed with the complexity in this coffee , and we knew it would be a great way to offer something a bit more unique to our community of folks who love a good Ethiopian coffee.

The name Buncho refers to the washing station where this coffee was processed. Located in the famous Sidama region, the Buncho washing station has a remarkable and inspiring history. This mill was built by and is now owned and operated by the Dukamo brothers, Assefa and Mulugata who founded the company Daye Bensa Coffee. Their bonafides for producing specialty coffee are the result of their innovation and tremendous work for the coffee producing communities in the Bensa, Aroressa, and Chire districts of Sidama.

Having grown up with coffee being a staple cash crop in their family garden, the brothers were all too familiar with the difficulty of not only cultivating coffee, but finding a station close enough to their community so they could bring their coffees to market. In 1997, Assefa established a washing station in the village of Girja, less than a mile from his parent’s home. Since these humble beginnings, the brothers have become some of the most influential folks in the coffee producing community of the Sidama region.

As of this year they own sixteen different washing stations, four dry mills and their own coffee farm called Daye Bensa. Their primary goal has been to provide something to their communities that they did not have as youngsters, centrally located mills and washing stations so producers no longer have to travel so far to find a market for their coffee. The freshness of the coffees they purchase is paramount, a fact that we’re sure our community will find evident in this cup profile. This particular lot is composed of indigenous heirloom varietals sourced from a community of smallholders and finished using the honey process. The story behind this excellent offering showcases just how important collaboration, community and dedication are to producing exquisite, world class coffee. This isn’t one you’ll want to miss out on, so be sure to get a bag before our supply runs out!

This Ethiopian honey processed coffee is complex and satisfying, with notes of a refreshing peach tea, a burst of tart raspberry and a clover honey sweetness.
