Finca Los Pinos is owned and operated by Arcenio Hernández and his family. His 9 hectare farm sits at 1775 masl and is located near the town of La Argentina in the Huila region of southwest Colombia. Hernández cultivates several botanical varieties including: Colombia, Castillo, Tabi and Typica. They wash the coffee via a mix of anaerobic and aerobic fermentation methods and dry the washed parchment on covered African raised beds. The coffee is grown in the shade of native hardwoods and fruit trees.
The cup offers a quintessential Huila profile, defined by a brown butter sweetness and creamy texture accented by a tart fruity acidity. Aromatic flavors of Amareno cherry, red grape, cola, and brown sugar, comingle to create a complex, yet balanced cup of coffee.
Hernández is part of the Cedro Alto Colombian Collective, which focuses on full transparency and small farmer sustainability. The price paid to the farm from Cedro Alto was $2.35 per lb of green exportable coffee, vs the $1.85 Colombian Commodity market price at the time of fixation. The farm averages a production cost of $1.33 per lb, so profiting an average net income of $1.03 per lb, or nearly double the profit as compared to the local commodity market.
