Our third (and final) Kenyan micro lot of 2020 was grown by a collective of 400 small farmers surrounding the Mahiga Factory in the central Nyeri region of Kenya. Nyeri is one of the best known regions for quality. In Kenya coffee is traded based on quality, and high premiums are paid for good coffee, which means well-endowed counties like Nyeri achieve very high average prices year after year, and the smallholders here with a few hundred trees at the most, along with additional employment or land uses in the highlands, are widely considered to be middle class.
This peaberry lot from the Mahiga factory is an exceptional example of what we look for in Kenyan peaberry coffee. This punchy little bean packs flavor in so densely that it explodes (figuratively speaking, don't worry) in the cup with aromas, textures, and flavors. Rich chocolate, fruit, and spice notes intermingle very playfully. The acidity is intense, but balanced, like a condensed burst of fruitiness like orange zest.
If you are a Kenyan coffee fan, look no further.
