DR Congo, Karango
This variant is currently sold out
This is our first time featuring a coffee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and we didn't know what we were missing. This particular microlot comes to us from about 80 smallholder farmer members of the SOPACDI cooperative delivering cherry to the Karango microstation.
This farmer-founded cooperative was the first to achieve Fair Trade certification in Congo. The coffee also carries organic certification. Members of the cooperative represent several different ethnic groups, speaking Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, and Kihavu, and many of the women members are widows. SOPACDI prioritizes quality, offering resources and paying premiums to farmers.
This coffee is big on flavor. It's somewhere between sweet and savory, with a tart grape and lime acidity, and a chocolatey toffee finish. This is only a seasonal offering and won't be around too long. So grab a bag now, especially if you've never had a Congolese coffee before, you'll be glad you did.
